Ole Miss decides on “Rebel Black Bear,” axes Colonel Reb…

The new mascot of the University of Mississippi - The Rebel Black BearAnd yet the resounding, nationwide “WTF” lives on.

Listen, I’m not here to preach about the merits of surrendering Colonel Reb to Union forces, or even slip in a classic Admiral Ackbar joke (or ten).

In fact, considering the other two finalists — out of an initial pool of over a thousand — were the “Hotty Toddy” and “Rebel Land Shark,” and the winner only got 62% of the vote, I suppose I have no choice but to applaud the Mississippian masses’ election of the “Rebel Black Bear” as Ole Miss’ new mascot.

But was even the mere prospect of such a dilemma necessary?

Again, just as a reminder, this isn’t about Colonel Reb. Screw him and his antiquated, anachronistic outlook on the modern world.

I mean, he was, like, so stuck in the past, man.  Right? And a past that obviously so many in Mississippi were sensitive to, if not outright ashamed of.

Taking that rat’s nest out of it, though, is one not still forced to wonder: Uhhh, just how in the hell did we get to a damn “Rebel Black Bear?”

Well, let’s explore that after the jump…

London unveiled their Olympic mascots yesterday. That’s really all I should have to write and you could infer the rest by simply staring at the picture. However, that’s not the effort that earns me 20 dollars every 3 months from this site so I SHALL PUSH ON!!!

Meet the Evergreen Geoduck

April 20, 2010

You have to applaud Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington for having a sense of humor when choosing their mascot so many years ago. They could’ve gone the safe route and given the world another Eagle, Tiger, Panther, or Bulldog. No, Evergreen went with a bit of local favor and chose a Geoduck, which is a mollusk native to the Pacific Northwest. A mollusk.

This particular mollusk has quite a phallic appearance(pictured below), which further adds to Evergreen’s sense of humor in their motto, Omnia Extares (or, “let it all hang out”). The final piece to this undoubtedly hippie-inspired, (possibly)intentional humor is the school’s fight song.

The Geoduck Fight Song

words and music by Malcolm Stilson, 1971

Go, Geoducks go,
Through the mud and the sand,
let’s go.
Siphon high, squirt it out,
swivel all about,
let it all hang out.

Go, Geoducks go,
Stretch your necks when the tide
is low
Siphon high, squirt it out,
swivel all about,
let it all hang out.

If anyone has a copy of the fight song actually being played please let us know! I keep trying to attach it to tunes I already know and nothing seems to go well.  Until then, read up on the Geoduck, check out the picture below, and watch a video of the mollusk with the most school spirit in action!

ACC Tournament’s Mascot Night may or may not have stooped to new low

ACC Women's Basketball Tournament Mascot Night has a conspicuous absense

This promotion poster looks rather innocent at first, doesn’t it?  Let alone the enticing value presented by the 4-4-4 deal, how could one not be drawn in by the inescapable psychological comfort something called “Mascot Night” induces?  Well, that’s how they get you.

As you’ll see (after the jump), there’s something quite ominous about this year’s ACC Women’s Basketball Tournament…
