Or just the latest, valiant competitor in a long line of brilliant perils on the pitch?

Either way, whether it comes from a professional on the game’s biggest stage, or just some kid in your local youth league, there’s no denying that soccer’s dreaded own goal is one of the most embarrassing moments in sports. Lucky for us, it also often happens to be one of the most humorous (save one).

Make the jump for 9 more classics…

Before we get rolling here, a distinction needs to be made: There are own goals, and then there are own goals – scored by Keepers.

And, yes. As you can see, the Keeper scored own goal is typically reserved for the amateur footie player…

Perhaps the most unique own goal, however, can’t fairly be attributed to any particularly player at all. Or even a human being. Take this legendary own goal, for instance. Scored by the wind…

Far more common is the own goal resulting from a bit of miscommunication and negligence. Not common at all is being murdered for your mistake, as Andres Escobar was for this one. R.I.P.

Kind of like the big man that insists he can run the point, they say in every Centre Back there’s a – at best mediocre – Center Forward that’s convinced he was destined to be a goal poacher. There are exceptions, however…

Seriously, sometimes I think they just let that dream of wearing the #9 get the best of ’em…

Of course, there are some that even the world’s greatest strikers will never duplicate…

And then there’s this…

And to bring us full circle, another all-time classic – and another involving a fantastic ricochet off an unfortunate player’s head (his own)…
