Jay Crawford Hearts Snoop Dog, Dr. Dre, Too Short

There’s been a lot of discussion on ESPN today about the 30th anniversary of John Lennon’s death.  Quite a bit more than I was expecting, honestly, but I guess Howard Cosell’s legendary announcement on Monday Night Football helps tie Lennon’s tragedy to the world of sports, if nothing else.

Well, right or wrong, Jay Crawford suffered a slightly different kind of tragedy on ESPN’s First Take this morning. The Lennon-inspired topic was “Who’s your No. 1 Musical Icon?,” and Jay’s answer didn’t go over too well (video after the jump)…

Reischea Canidate went with Michael Jackson. Solid.

Skip Bayless surprised everyone with his choice of Jim Morrison, but this was ultimately still deemed reasonable by his peers.

Then came Jay. Dear, sweet Jay. Jay dropped a bomb on the panel — a Snoop Dog bomb — backtracked a bit, then offered Dr. Dre as a contender. And yet the derision continued.

As a last resort of sorts, Jay finally mustered up Too Short. But — Jay’s flashing of the “West Side” sign notwithstanding — if Snoop and Dr. Dre weren’t good enough for this crowd, it’s clear that offering was out of sheer desperation. Perhaps even confusion…
